what types of Finch males can be housed in a flight cage for 2 to 4 birds

If you are wanting to do different species, you can run into issues since birds don't always get along, and some finch species are more agressive.
What are you looking at doing? What are the demensions of the cage?

Please take the time to read : http://www.avianweb....MartDangers.htm
Vet care for a bird starts around $80 for an office visit. Better to get healthy birds to start with.

I would say from a mom and pop store under $20 each is good. You may get them cheaper from a local breeder though.

Yeah, at least mine were. They were always chasing and pecking at each other if there were mroe than 2 birds, even if there weren't females around. You could try, though! Female societies don't sing, but they chirp. I think they're cute - they come in different colors. Maybe you can find a breeder? When my societies had babies, I always watched to see which ones started singing, and which didn't, so I knew which were males and which were females.
You didn't keep them in a (too) small cage? Sometimes cage size make all the difference, and IMO there aren't such a thing as a too large cage : )

So, I wonder if it just depends?

Nope. I had about 5 in a huge aviary, and they still wanted to bicker. Little brats.
Oh well.. : ) I know what you mean.. i had two male canaries who would constantly go at it even if they had the whole room for themselves.. It is often worse in too small spaces though, so my 'warning' was more a general one.
