Orphaned Baby Bunny...

When I got to his house I got a warm washcloth and started to rub his bottom because it looked like he had some dried feces on him (a sign that his mother hadn't been around I figured) and did the dehydration test where you lift the skin on the neck. It appeared as though he was pretty dehydrated so I decided to try and warm him up so I could get some fluids to him.
Just as he was warming up with an electric heating pad (I don't think it was too hot, and he wasn't directly on top of it), he tried to jump away, and when I picked him up his legs continued to kick straight out. He started gasping, and then passed away.
I guess I was really shocked and hope that nothing I did contributed to his death. It was chilly out yesterday, about 50 degrees and cloudy. My guess is he was away from his mother too long, but if anyone has any ideas or advice I'd appreciate it.
I can't stop thinking about the poor little guy and am so sad I couldn't help him

If he died right after kicking though, he most likey broke his spine. Babies are really really fragile, and you have to watch how you hold them. They arent like kittens or puppies that their mothers move them. If you dont hold adult rabbits correctly or drop them you can break their spine too.

I didn't notice any injury, but I guess the spasming did confuse me. I hope the poor guy didn't have a broken spine, because then he might have been in pain. We were really careful to be gentle with him, though.

At this point, my biggest concern is that he was ill, and that he could have possibly given the illness to me or my friends.
I know that isn't very likely, and everyone who touched them washed their hands (I think I washed mine 3 times haha) but I'm still a little worried.
