Over a month ago I adopted three 4-week old button quail, 2 female 1 male, and they are adorable I've been keeping them in my old rabbit cage with Yesterday's News cat litter as the substrate (which did wonders to prevent them from stinking up my place). I've been feeding them poultry starter and oyster shell/grit mix every day which they devour and bathe in every day. Once in a while I give them some hard boiled egg with the shell as well as some mealworms (which they LOVE). A plastic pet bird waterer that clips onto the side of the cage has been good to allow them access to water while not letting them muck it up with their dirty feet. They've been really cute to look after and my two parrots love to bug them as well. I just have a few questions for any other experienced quail owners.
What is the best substrate to use for their dust baths? I've just been giving them a plate of the grit up to now, but I'm sure they'd appreciate a better substrate.
When do the females usually start laying eggs? Should I make a special laying box for them?
Are there any other things I can give them to enrich their lives?
Thanks for any advice!
