Getting a Second Budgie
Posted 30 August 2011 - 03:56 PM
First of all, I have a female parakeet. Should I get a male parakeet with the same color? Should I get a male with a different color? Should I get a younger male? Should I get an older male?
Also, if I get another parakeet, how should I introduce him to my other parakeet. Should I put them together right away? Should I put two cages next to each other for a few days? Help me guys.

When taking in another bird, it's best to quarantine that bird in a different cage, different room, and if possible, different air space. This means separate food, water, toys, perches, etc. Quarantine should last, at minimum, 30 days, but 60-90 days is preferable. Be sure to wash/clean up before handling each bird.
This gives you the chance to start bonding with the new bird, and if they can hear each other, the budgies can get to know each other that way. Then you can introduce them in the same room and allow them out of the cages at the same time to interact in neutral areas.

Anything and everything that the new budgie touched must be cleaned and disinfected. If it can't be safely disinfected, it should be tossed out. Nothing of the new birds items should go around your 'old' bird until it's been cleaned up.

Get a male because two females will fight to the death.
Coloration does not matter so get your favorite colour.
Try to get a male with the closest age possible so one does not feel dominant.
You should put the cages close to each other so they can get used to each other and not just a bag for 15 minutes like a fish a week possibly.
Hope these help you out!
