New Eclectus owner- 10 months male baby
Posted 08 December 2011 - 06:27 PM
I've bought a 10 months old male eclectus (The leg band has 26 Jan 11) , He is fully tame( I can touch everything including his wings and chest except his head, He is still so sensitive about it and it's normal for ekkies as I've read during the research and says 4 words so far and lots of mumbling. The pet store that I've bought it from told me that it is a Vos, But I'm not sure and couldn't determine whether it's a vos or red-sided or even a SI or a mix, I've checked the links that compares subspecies but it's still hard to differentiate.
My eclectus is larger than an african grey or an amazon in size if it helps at all determining the subs. I've a Blue fronted amazon and I can say that it's larger and taller than it. Here are some pics if it can help determining it.
I'm leaning toward Vos or RS due to it's large size only but I could be wrong.
P.S: I feel that it looks smaller in the pics, The bird is larger in real. I've included a pics of it's head and iris and the tail/vent as well, As a side note regarding the tail, The bird was in a small cage in the pet store, The vet advised me to take off some of the corrupted/completely broken tail feathers and he did so in order to get a new healthy feathers and gave me a 2 small bottle of vits(Drops & powder).
I appreciate all of your help and thanks in advance.

He's a nice looking boy! So difficult to tell subspecies from pictures. I really hate to venture a guess, but I will say I don't think he's a Red Sided, mostly because of his beak color. Usually Vos have darker upper beaks also, so judging just from his beak color I'd say SI. His head shape looks SI to me also. How much does he weigh? Is he clipped? if not, can you take a picture of him from the back? Vos (and RS) have very long tail feathers that extend several inches below the tips of folded wings when viewed from behind.
Thank you so much. I don't really care that much about the subs, I just want to determine what I do have, So, Please feel free and don't worry at all.
He weights 518 grams, He is mainly on a fresh fruits, Vegs diets + Sunflower seeds as a snack. Yes, He is clipped. Thanks again

if hes bigger than a grey he may be a grand and they mis labled him which means you may have a 2000 doller bird vs 800/1200 dollers but thats oregon pricing as here they are rare.
Who knows lol..Actually, Yes, He is bigger than the adult african grey that was in the same pet store, and Also it's bigger than my own BFA.

I want to note that the subspecies named "Grand" is not one of the larger subspecies even though the name sounds like it would be. Please look at the weight ranges on the table on the page in the link below. As you can see, they are often the same size as or a little larger than a Soloman and usually smaller than Red Sided.
