First time Parrot owner needs a little help

I just recently took in a Maxamillion Pionus that was displaced by this summers flooding. She had been moved around 2 or 3 times and was givien to the pet shop that my wife manages to find a new home. We took her in and have enjoyed her thus far and look forward to a long companionship.
After giving her a week to get used to the new setting I started by putting a table in front of the cage opening the door onto it and letting her come out on her own terms to get some nuts and such. I had done that twice and on the second time she jumped at me then onto the floor. I camly took a small childs blanket picked her up and placed her back on the table in front of her cage and she went back in. I remained in the same spot I started prior to her jumping at me for another 5 minutes with the door open so that she didnt think that her actions would change the situation. (was that the right thing to do?)
Since then she is now acting defensivly iand at times aggressivly when I get near the cage. For instance this morning I took her food dish and filled it and she stood there agressivly wiping her beack doing some slight hissing and bitting at the cage. In responce I stood my ground telling her no in a slow low voice, once she settled down I spoke softly to her telling her she was a pretty girl and backed away from the cage. (was that right?) Any suggestions on how to begin to earn her trust now that we have had our first encounter together?

Here is India pre tramatic moment. She is in a new cage that is to small for her and she has a toy she almost got hurt on today that needs to come out. Though I am affraid she did I am hopeing she didnt assossiate that bit with me too. She got her foot stuck in it. dealing with those tow issues alone with such an angry friend have got me wondering how to go about this.
