Hello, I have two budgies (male and female) whom I want to breed. I had recently
provided a budgie nest box
from the store
that my friend's dad made; it's been a week and a day, but they don't seem interested in it. The two are over a year old, maybe close to two years since we bought them from the store when they were supposedly
four months old, and seem to be in breeding condition --Cloud (boy) has a dark, solid blue cere and Indigo (girl) an almost dark, soft-crusty brown. I haven't seen them mate yet, but they are certainly bonded; they kiss each other's beaks and preen each other often. I constantly put veggies in their food container, along with their usual seeds, and provide fresh water daily. I've done all of this even before I bought them their nest box, but it seems to me like they aren't really interested in breeding. So, I'm trying to put them in the mood by leaving them with downloaded Youtube budgie sounds all day (heard the audience encourages breeding
) and leaving the light on at night until twelve in the morning to make them believe it's mating season.
Additionally, the cage is fairly large and has a trap door where I can insert the perch inside while leaving the nest box outside. I placed a non-slip bedding inside (the type you place in cabinets under the plates so that it won't slide around) along with few
wood shavings. Also, the length of the perch sticking out of the nest box is equal to the length inside, which is about two and 1/2 inches.
Can someone provide me insight and enlighten me?
When can I expect them to gain interest in the nest box, and after that, in how many days would egg laying start? Moreover, am I missing something or doing something wrong?
PS. I have another cage in which I plan to put the wished for
baby budgies. I'm also stacked on baby budgie formula and syringes (two)
. I plan to handle and tame each of the baby budgies and am ready to take care of the babies if ever Cloud and Indigo do not perform their job perfectly. I plan to keep only two of the 4-8 babies. I am giving the rest to my very trusted friends.
