our birds are in the laundry room so it's not a huge room but its big enough for them to get lots of flying exercise

I have a canary and a love bird and let them fly around a few times a week.
I keep them confined to the kitchen. They go back into their cages when
they done with their exercise. I don't let them out together.

If you are gonna let birds fly free in your house, you must be vigilant about EVERY thing that has water in it. Fish bowl/tank, vases of flowers, even tall glasses can spell doom for a featherbutt, especially one tiny as a finch.
That is my advice

That said, if I didn't live in the same building as about three hundred other people, I would probably be more comfortable with the idea of letting a bird that is not tame fly around, but I would restrict it to a particular room and make sure that it could get back into the cage by itself; as Rahni said the stress of being caught outweighs the benefits of flying around.
