Downsides? Litter tended to get shoved out of the box simply by cleaning itself. Not only that, but we have two cats, one of which easily freaks out over sudden/loud noises and/or movements. This going off in the night, while he's sleeping, results in one frantic cat who's jumping around with claws outstretched, probably figuring he's trapped... this doesn't help any when at night he's asleep with my mother underneath the bed covers... as it is, we already have to deal with sudden bites from him (he has a tendency to bite my mother in the middle of the night, leaving her bleeding and eventually, nice swollen flesh...). Needless to say, *IF* we use that litterbox, we don't plug it in!
The person we got the litter box from had no issue with it. Her cat was curious about it for a long while and would go and watch it in action, but after a while got used to it. We got the litter box only because the owner moved over seas and took her cat with her.
