Rescued - Kakariki
Posted 25 February 2010 - 05:49 AM
I have just taken in a rescued Kakariki who has been checked over by a vet and they say he/she is okay but just a little underweight. I have cockateils and have never had any other bird. Can anybody help with advice on food, sleep patterns and how do you determine the sex etc.
Also Riki seems to be doing alot of sleeping, could that be stress? Riki is eating and drinking which is a good sign.

Male kakarikis have a longer broader beak then females, I'm no expert but judging from the photo it looks to be male.

On another note can anybody give me advice how to help his itchy eye? He seems to be rubbing his right eye and around the beak area alot. Its definitly an irritation of some kind. I have been spraying him with a water sprayer which he seems to be liking but we have bad weather at the moment so I can get him out in the sun. My teil has a eye lash issue and her one eye gets irritated and giving her a bath and outdoor sun seem to be the one thing that helps.

I placed one of the teils toys in the cage and he is not interested in it what so ever. He has not other toys at the moment as his cage is to small for his climbing ways and I am looking at getting him a larger cage very soon. I think he just likes being out of the cage and bouncing around
