Best bird pet shops in Aus
Posted 09 September 2010 - 01:25 PM
*must have birds, not a pet 'convenience store' that has no livestock
*birds are healthy and seem happy
*staff are friendly, knowledgeable and give good advice about their birds
*may not have the widest range of birds but often have unusual birds or could get any bird you wanted or could direct you to a reputable breeder...
*has good brands and interesting stock
Please list the state then the pet shop, only one per state, list as many states as you wish...
I'm just curious...

City Barn in Malaga in Perth is great, Ali the woman who manages? it is herself a bird keeper and very knowledgeable, compassionate, and keen to help. She does sell some birds of her own and the smaller types, budgies, cockatiels, plus all kinds of food, suppliments, baby raising stuff, medicines, cages and loads of toys. In fact her toy range is getting larger as she goes along.

I know it was already briefly mentioned, but the staff are always really sweet and knowledgeable and the prices are great - it's only $10 for a wing clip, for example. Also, a nice note on their site:
"Birds 'n' All is the only West Australian bird dealership that is owned and managed by dedicated Aviculturists who in addition to the retail sale of birds are involved in the conservation of native species including the Naso Redtail Black Cockatoo (Calyptrohyncus Banksii Naso) and Carnaby Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus Latirostris) indigenous to Western Australia plus breeding programs for the Muir’s Corella and the Red Eared Firetail Finch."
Every time I've been there they've provided really great advice to any bird-related question I have, and the birds there seem really happy. I was there today and they had a pair of adorable black-capped caiques that kept rolling onto their backs for tummy-rubs.
They ARE in Caversham, which is a little bit of a drive for some Perthites but still very much worth a look. If you check the sites' gallery you can see how the shop and grounds look - well, 'cept the grass is a little less green now, it is summer after all.
Another I've looked into recently was 4 Paws and Claws day spa and pet shop... That one is a more general pet store than Birds 'N' All however the owner sells Roudybush pellets for much cheaper than I've ever seen anywhere else. Also, she has a red-tailed black cockatoo named Martha, a galah hybrid (I think corella mix?) named Babe and a sulphur crested I always forget the name of (Teddy? Henry?) and they all look really great - from what she's told me, they're not at the store in Coventry's markets in Morley everyday and go back to a nice big aviary for most of the week. The lady there (I think her name was Helena) seemed really invested in caring for birds well. I've not been there as much as Birds 'N' All though - 4 Paws and Claws only just opened when the Coventry's markets did and that wasn't too long ago. Oh, that one's in Morley for those interested. Sorry I keep forgetting so many details!
Anyway, just my two cents. I hope that helps anyone here in Perth looking around.
Rain Walker and Araluen aka Luen/Chicken the RB2/galah.
