Ollie was my first fid. I had recently had to stop work because I ended up with Rhumotoid Arthritis. With so much time cooped up in doors and likelyhood of working much if at all in the future I could see myself being able to share my life with a animal like I did growing up.
Walking past the local pet store they had a display of many Indian Ringneck parrots in the large glass cage at the front of the store.
There Ollie was, sitting regal atop a play pen ladder preening himself and giving me a very loveable stare. I fell in love with the little guy.
I wandered into the shop and asked the lady about parrots, what they eat, their life span, cage requirements and what they are like as pets etc.
She told me Ollie could live 50 years, he is on a diet of pellets veggies and fruits and is craves attention and love.
He sounded like a perfect companion for me, especially since my Fiance worked a lot at the time.
So I brought a big bag of pellets, a heap of fruits and veggies, a large cage and forrage, foot and hanging toys.
We hiked back home with Ollie in a box, with me carrying him and my Fiance with his cage.
We set up his cage, I put Banana in his forrage toy and gave him a nut as a treat and we soon were fast friends.
All day we sat together watching TV, wandering around the house and playing games. A month later I felt sad for Ollie as I knew when I had to go to hospital he was lonely and sad alone in the house so along came!--
Sammy was sitting up the back of the pet store in a cage with a white Indian Ringneck. Sammy is BRIGHT green and very very active and curious. Where Ollie is more relaxed but loves to fly around the house and bounce - so does Sam but Sam can never sit still for long!
The lady at the pet store brought Sammy out of the cage for me to meet. I loved him straight away, mainly because he was just a ball of energy and green and fun! He chatters all the time and squarks a lot. He is just GOGOGO. On his first vet visit I explained him as if there was such thing as bird ADHD he had it, but it was in a good way. He livens up the house and brings a smile to everyones face.
Nearly a year later he escaped through broken flywire in the house, I did not think he would get out of the hole but he is so curious he could not help himself. The wire was meant to be fixed 3 days after, but the damage was done.
For 6 days I ran around the neighbourhood screaming for Sam. There were flyers at every vet practice in Brisbane, posters on poles and in mailboxes. Posters at local hospitals and schools. He was on every website I could think of and the RSPCA.
6 days later I saw a add on RSPCA that a ringneck was found (5 days ago but they didnt know what type of bird he was) Sure enough, it was Sammy!
He was found 16ks from my house, he flew 16ks in less than one day! In some ways I was proud of his feat, shows he is a healthy boy but while he was out I did not sleep or eat I just ran around screaming his name and asking anyone and everyone if they had seen my baby. I cried more tears than I think I ever have in my life. It was the hardest thing to go through for both my fiance and myself as Sammy is a son to us.
Sammy was found at a wedding reception the day after he flew off. It ended up being in the local paper because he is so sweet with anyone. He was given to the local vet. I went and picked up him and he was very happy to see us! We immediatly went to the Avian vet to get all 3 of our birds microchipped and checked up.
This leads to Charlie. While Sammy was missing, Ollie was very freaked out being a only bird again, with me out of my mind with fear for Sammy and not wanting Ollie to be to stressed I went out and picked up Charlie from a local breeder.
Charlie is a sweetheart. He talks up a storm. Hello Charlie boy, CHARBOI!, Whatchadoin? Pretty pretty boy, Step up! Come on! Ya ready!?.
He loves kisses, he will sit with me all day if I sit and kiss him.
He settled in very quickly and easily with Ollie and Sam. Sammy and Charlie sit around all day preening each other. Ollie being more regal and just loves to be 'near' others except myself he will kiss and cuddle me lots.
Charlie adapted with the other 2 boys with ease and became very loved fast. Now we are a happy family of five!!
Ollie Sam and Charlie all love showers, they join me every morning and sit on my arm and all get under the spray. They also often get mist baths by a spray bottle often. It really helps in the hot humid weather.
They 'bounce' like kangaroos often its very funny. When they are happy about something they often bounce/hop around the place.
We have a wonderful vet, Adrian at the Brisbane Bird Vet. Who has helped us learn about caring for parrots and keeps my birds very healthy and happy :) There is another vet Amy there who is also wonderful she treated Charlie for his recent annual check. The staff and nurses are also amazing, so if your Auzzie and need a bird vet I say go to them! They also got a awesome range of pellets forrage toys destruction toys etc that keep my fids very happy. I do think its really important for annual checks and blood works just to have peace of mind your fids are happy and healthy. I worry heaps and heaps about that sort of stuff, probably because of my own illness. I started out 100% healthy but suddenly I got a auto immune disease that turned bad. So, anything is possible.
They are all flighted, with the exception of Charlie who upon arriving was clipped but once he moults he will be flighted like the others. They spend most of the day flying around, wrecking their toys and wood bits - mainly love foot 'plastic cat toy balls with bell inside', forrage and bask in the sun. They only go in cage for sleep or when we have to go out which is very rare since one of us stays home with them. Or we try and take them with us for adventures!
I live in Brisbane with my Fiance but are moving soon to Tasmania for the fresh air, easy living by the beach. Organic produce for the birds and loads more walking about.
I have Rhumotoid Arthritis which makes life hard, because of this I am immunosuppressed meaning that my immune system is 'turned off' so it doesn't destroy my body.
I grew up in Daylesford, Victoria. When I was a teenager we moved to Tasmania, after a while I then moved to NSW then Brisbane QLD. But soon moving back to Tasmania as it is where I have felt most healthy and my Mum is there for more support because of my now disability.
I have been with my Fiance since 2005, we are very happy and will get married sometime in future when I am feeling healthier.
I grew up with animals. Horse riding with most of my time. Always having dogs and cats around.
Now sharing my life with birds has led to wonderful experiances and taught me many things, they bring great joy to my life and my fiances.
What other type of pets do you own?
