SunShine is a three year old Sun Conure we recently got. When I first heard about her the story was they were moving and could not take her. Once I got there the story was they had been working on their house up north and she was being left home alone for 3-4 days at a time on a weekly basis with food, tv and a light on a timer. As soon as I met her she flew at me aggressively and then went to her owner. She preened him and gave him kisses while the wife said she was a "b*t%h". They said she had nipped the wife once while she tried to kiss him and SunShine was on his chest.
SunShine took an immediate liking to my son though. She showed she was a sweet bird and stepped up for him, got in her cage for him, even danced the first day.
Bringing her home she was extremely aggressive towards me. Hissing and swaying, ruffling her feathers, even charging me while on top of her cage. First change I made was clipping her wings as she was fully flighted and would literally fly off her cage to attack me.
I gave her her space, thinking she may need time to adjust. I bought her new toys and slowly added them in. Changed her diet to include a healthy mix of seed, nuts, pasta and fresh fruits and vegetables. Spoke to her softly, spent time sitting and talking to her in a quiet enviornment. Still she bites me every chance she gets unless I am giving her a treat.
With my sons she will ride on their shoulders, step up and even climb off the cage to sit with them. If I am on the couch though she makes a point of coming after me. I have never been violent to this bird and do not look like her previous owner what so ever.
When she bites me I do not shy away and I firmly tell her no. But she has broken the skin and does a gnawing motion even when I close my thumb on her beak.
Without harming her how do I work through these problems? I want to bond with her and be able to have her as a part of our family which is not possible if she is going to attack me. I do not want to give up on her and make her stay across the room from me or in her cage all the time.
Anyone have any suggestions?
