Topics I've Started

Cockatoos & Macaws & African Greys

14 January 2012 - 03:51 AM

Hey everyone.
(Still fairly new so I'm hoping this is the right area)
I have a few things to talk about, so I'm going to try and be as clear as possible.
IT IS A LONG THREAD, SO BE AWARE!

To start;
I'm new to the bird world, in the aspect of owning. However, I am, and have always been, an animal person. So if you can imagine, I'm always looking things up on the internet about various animals. Recently, I started reading about birds more, since I've always had a love for them. I think the love really started on a day when my family and I ventured out of the house and went to a bird specialty store. I was young, I couldn't tell you the exact age I was, but I was around maybe 7-9.
Anyway, We went in and they have hand-raised birds for sale, and they are not kept in cages, rather an open area with lots of perches and toys(the wings of the birds were clipped so they couldn't fly off). I walked over to the birds, and saw an african grey. Adorable little bird, I reached my hand out slowly, and it wanted me to pet it on it's head. So I did. Now, my brother tried to pet the bird, and it didn't like him. So I grew even more fond of this little bird, since it seemed to only enjoy me. We left the store after some time passed, and my love for birds was seeded.

So for a more present time.
A few months ago, I was browsing the web, and I came across a picture of a bird I'd never seen before. I didn't know what kind of bird it was, so I set out to find out what kind of bird it was. I found out, it was a Rose Breasted Cockatoo, or Galah. I instantly fell in love with these birds, and decided, I needed to get one some day. So I've been reading around on Galah and Cockatoos in general. I have read that they can be very loud, demanding of attention, and are not the bird for everyone. However this doesn't stunt my want for a Galah or other cockatoos.

I'm at a stage of my life where I need to decide what I want to ultimately do with my life. A point when I need to figure out who I am. And though the love may have just been reignited recently, I think the path I'd like to follow, is one that involves birds. I've known for a long time that no matter what I decide to do, it would involve animals, and most likely, some rescue work. I've already had a lot of experience raising baby animals, training dogs, and such. So I am fully aware of the fact that working in the field of animals is not easy work, I still want to do it. I know birds are, in general, not an easy animal to handle and raise. Again, this does not deter me from wanting to take on the challenge.

So, let's try to get back to what this title is about, Cockatoos, Macaws, And African Greys.
Of all birds I've seen, whether in person or TV(internet), Cockatoos, Macaws and African Greys have really caught my eye. I am aware that they are extremely intelligent birds, therefore, more challenging birds. However that is one of the things that draws me to them.
However, I have a question for you more bird savvy people. Which, of those three, would be best to tackle first? As I mentioned, I am in love with Galahs, but I'd rather have more input from smarter people on the subject.
I do have someone I know in person that I can talk to at some point, but I wanted to jump on it now.
A note I think I should add is: I know how to approach a bird, I have read and watched a lot of stuff on birds, so I have this effect on them (and all animals), that, they seem to know I won't hurt them, and there is some thin layer of trust there once they notice, but they are still a little unsure.

I recently got a, basically wild, cockatiel. His wings were unclipped, he would try to bite, fly away, anything. But in the matter of ONE DAY, WITHOUT TREATS, I was able to have the bird step up onto my fingers/hand/wrist. I was a little shocked myself, but proud.

So if you could answer the question and then whatever information you can give me, won't be without appreciation. This could be, your personal experience, links to websites, good books, etc.

Thank you, and sorry for the long, long thread.
Shelby

New; Hello!

12 January 2012 - 11:41 PM

Hello, My name is Shelby and I just signed up to this forum.
I just go a normal grey Cockatiel. I've always liked birds, but never had one before. Just went to local pet shops to play with them.
I always to a LOT of reading about animals, birds are no exception. I would love to get into breeding and raising birds as either a hobby or career. I'd love to rescue them as well. I would love to get a Rose Breasted Cockatoo. I adore those birds so much. I work with a sanctuary here in my home city, so I might try to get more involved with there birds and rescue work.

Well that's a little bit more about me, if you have any questions, go ahead and ask. If I have any questions, I'll ask as well.
