I have always loved doves - I even got one tattooed to my shoulder when I turned 18. They just seem so peaceful and graceful. I knew I had wanted a bird so when I happened to be browsing Craigslist and saw an ad for two young ringneck doves, I got really excited. Now, I wasn't on Craigslist actually looking for a bird, specifically - that's not normally where I would go to find a pet! Normally I would go to a reputable, well-known breeder for a bird. But after doing some research, the thing I realized about doves is that people who breed them tend to breed A LOT of them. I wanted a bird that came from a more close-knit setting where I knew it got one-on-one attention. So after talking to this lady on Craigslist, who only has a few birds and spends a fair bit of time with them, I decided I would go ahead and get her light cream baby. I named her Calliope after the Greek muse of poetry.
She is just a darling and I treasure her every day. I take her on walks with me when the weather is nice, and I just spend lots of time with her in general. We are very close and she's quite affectionate. I go to school in Canada (I was just taking this past academic year off for medical reasons), so I will be bringing her with me in September. Traveling is stressful for birds, I know, but after thinking about it carefully, I realized that she and I are so close that it would probably be more stressful for her to be without me. So, I am going to do all the necessary complicated paperwork and such so she can come with me.
