I've never owned a bird before, but am thinking about getting a budgie. However, I want to make sure I could provide a good home for my bird, and I do have a few concerns.
First off, I live in a relatively small apartment, and have four cats. The bird would have to be kept either in the bedroom, or in the spare room where I house my reptiles. The cats are allowed in the bedroom, but not in the reptile room. I don't spend much time in the reptile room, but am usually in the bedroom at my computer for a few hours daily. I could probably lock the cats out for a litte while every evening to interact with the bird as I did internet stuff. If I kept the bird's cage in the bedroom all the time, though, would the sight of the cats walking around freak it out? They wouldn'tbe able to get anywhere near the cage, but still. I'm also a little bit worried about the noise and the mess...if anyone has experience keeping a bird cage in their bedroom, please let me know how bad it is.
If I were to house the bird in the reptile room, however, I'm worried that it would get depressed since nobody really goes in there for more than 20 minutes per day. I would still take the bird out every day and let him hang out with me in the bedroom (since I plan to tame it), but I don't know if it would be enough. It would be alone for most of the day in either room, but in the bedoom it would probably see a bit more of people when it wasn't out. Don't know if that would make any difference.
The other thing I was wondering about is taming. The budgie I have my eye on is at a pet store, but I know for a fact that they've only had it for a little less than a week. I was speaking to the breeder (who sold a few birds to the store that she had raised herself), and she said that they're already pretty tame. They seemed skittish around me, but I assume that's natural since they don't know me and they're in a new and stressful environment. I do know that they're very young, since she brought them pretty much as soon as they were ready, but I don't know their exact age (or whether or not they've been hand-reared). Is it likely that it could learn to think of me as a friend, sit on my shoulder and hang out with me, even if it takes a little work to gain its trust? I only want to get this one bird, since I want it to bond with me rather than another avian friend.
Any input would be much appreciated. And if you think that my living situation isn't suitable for a bugdie, do let me know. I'll be disappointed, but I also don't want to get a pet I can't keep happy. Thanks in advance.
